# Why functional?

> Why Oklahoma Functional Medicine exists — Oklahoma Functional Medicine is an editorial research website. Its writer follows published experiments about bodily function; it offers no medical care.

**About this site**

A bigger structure, a busier hormone signal, an ordinary task. Their disagreements are more absorbing than a polished account of improvement.

## Editorial scope

Oklahoma Functional Medicine is the title of this editorial research website. Published research about bodily function is the subject of my curiosity. No clinician is offering care through this title. The site is not a medical practice or any other business: it has no appointments, prescriptions, treatments or products to offer. Oklahoma in the title establishes no local medical service. Nothing here is medical advice.

The word functional is the invitation that interests me. An account of improvement has to reach the things a body can do to satisfy me. A structure might grow; a signal might rise. The practical difference is what I am chasing. Curiosity supplies a direction without supplying an answer.

## My starting bone study

The [ipamorelin mineral-content experiment in female rats](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10828840/) gives the question a pleasingly concrete shape. Mineral content increased through larger bone dimensions while cortical volumetric density stayed unchanged. I admire the result more with those separate measurements intact than I would admire a vague claim about stronger bones.

It leaves a task for my imagination and a limit for my conclusions. A direct strength test would be satisfying. Until there is an answer to that question, the actual dimensional finding has plenty of interest of its own. The mechanical testing scene at the top of the site is an illustration of that question, rather than a record of the bone experiment.

## The useful interruption

I am susceptible to an elegant mechanism. The [unsuccessful bowel-recovery trial](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25331030/) interrupts the elegance with a meal and a result that missed its primary endpoint. I welcome the interruption. It makes the word function accountable to an ordinary activity.

The [reading list](/references) is where the bone, hormone, bowel and safety accounts come together. Their awkward company suits me. A tidy reputation would be less interesting than the experiments that produced these different answers.
